A-1 Barricades / A&H Safety Supply has served the traffic-control needs of the Southeastern United States since 1977. What started as a local supply operation has spent more than four decades doing the same unglamorous, essential thing: making sure the crews working on Chattanooga's roads, and the drivers passing them, both get home.
The work runs from a single work-zone sign for a utility cut to a full event-crowd-control setup for a street festival. Contractors, municipalities, utilities, event producers and property managers all end up needing the same things — the right device, meeting the right standard, available when the job starts.
We are a local, experienced team with our own trucks and our own stock. The same people who answer the phone are the ones who know the gear and get it to your site. For a contractor with a crew standing by, that is the difference between a five-minute call and a support ticket.
Two credentials sit behind that. A-1 is a pre-approved subcontractor with the Tennessee Department of Transportation, so a prime contractor can bring us onto a state highway project without first waiting out an approval cycle. And our staff hold ATSSA certifications — the American Traffic Safety Services Association trains and certifies the people who design, install and supervise temporary traffic control, which means the advice attached to an order comes from someone measured against the same standard the inspector will use.

WHY IT MATTERS
Local is a structure, not a slogan
Plenty of suppliers describe themselves as local. Fewer are locally owned, and the difference shows up on the day something goes wrong. When a delivery has to move up, when a count changes on a Friday afternoon, when a job needs a judgement call rather than a policy — an owner in Chattanooga can make that decision, and a regional branch of an investor-owned group generally cannot.
A-1 has been owned and run from here since 1977. The trucks are ours, the stock is held here rather than drawn from a distant warehouse, and the person who picks up the phone can commit to something.
Scale is the other half of it. Being locally owned usually means being small enough that a large job has to be turned away. A-1 carries the inventory and the fleet to take on the ones that a smaller outfit cannot accommodate — a multi-week highway closure, a festival perimeter, a portable signal running for a month — without handing the customer off to a supplier three states away.
